Dear DSF Athletic Booster Club Member:
At its meeting on October 27, the Henrico County School Board approved the acquisition of land adjacent to Freeman High School that has become available.
The acquisition must also be approved by the Board of Supervisors.
If you'd like to listen to the discussion at the previous School Board meeting, please visit the HCPS website (www.henrico.k12.va.us), click on BoardDocs, 2011,October 13, 2011 Work Session, View the Agenda, Item 7.02 on the left, then scroll down to the bottom of the Agenda Item Detail and click on Discussion of the Amendment to the FY 2011-12 Capital Improvement Plan.MP3
.
As mentioned at the School Board meeting, and demonstrated on the attached, DSF's acreage is far below the average acreage for the county's high schools. If you support this land acquisition for DSF, please email our Supervisor Mrs. Pat O'Bannon at [email protected] and let her know of you support.
Below is a sample email. Please feel free to alter the sample as appropriate.
Thanks.

Dear Ms. O'Bannon:
My name is ________ and I am a parent of ___ children that attend [have attend] Henrico County Public Schools. My daughter/son is[are] presently [a] [freshman/sophomore/junior/senior] at Douglas Freeman High School.
I understand that the Henrico County School Board has approved an amendment to its 2011-2012 Capital Improvement Plan for the acquisition of land adjacent to Freeman High School.
I am writing to you to ask for your support of this acquisition.
I understand that Freeman has one of the smallest acreages of all the county high schools. I also understand that the School Board has the money for this acquisition from its Land Reserve Fund, which was established for the purpose of, among other things, acquiring land for future school use.
As I am sure you are aware, Freeman is in dire need of additional fields for various school activities, especially its physical education classes and its sports teams. With essentially no practices fields that so many other county schools have, the football field is used and shared by not only the football teams, but also all physical education classes, boys and girls varsity and junior varsity soccer teams, track teams, lacrosse teams, and even the marching band. Our softball field utilizes a temporary outfield fence that is removed every fall so that the football team may practice and must be reinstalled every spring in order for the softball team to practice and play. Our boys and girls soccer teams alternate weekly where the team practices--either on the football field or in grass area on the other side of the softball field’s temporary fence which is far from being a regulation sized soccer field. Our marching band must fit their practice in between the teams on the football field, the baseball field and the softball field. Our field hockey teams practice and play on the baseball outfield, while our boys and girls lacrosse teams cannot practice and play their games on Freeman fields due to the lack of space. It is clear that Freeman High School is in need of additional fields.
Thus, I urge you to support this land acquistion.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
.
